Marketing Silicon Valley Lost

When I accepted my position at the Research Triangle Park, I knew I had a challenge ahead of me: I’d inherited a brand that had been forgotten by an entire generation. But in my nearly two years as the sole PR and Marketing lead for this non-profit, I’ve made some great strides and netted mentions in The Huffington PostThe Globe & Mail and Forbes.

Online Engagement for Traffic & Leads

Traditional SEO and digital marketing techniques are changing – and content is taking over. Social media strategy is really about recognizing good stories and sharing them with an engaged user base, on the right platforms. Connecting with customers and evangelists is key – a well-built “social fulcrum” helps stories go further. But the real proof is in the numbers. Every month, under my management, RTP’s social media accounts generated millions of impressions and hundreds of engaged followers.

And all of this energy attracted all manner of powerful outliers and opportunities outside of the digital realm. Selfie-snapping with the Woz; nerding it up with Alexis Ohanian; being t’kay with George Takei; dropping beats with the GZA; hitting golf balls with John Daly; kicking it with the King of the Cowboys; and hey, even connecting with this guy (a vintage boots salesman in Austin, TX). Community engagement and brand building is best when rapport when can be built with anyone — big or small.

It doesn’t end at social. Outside of the digital realm, I partnered with the Kauffman Foundation, Eisenhower Fellows, Fidelity Investments, Burroughs Wellcome Fund and others to create a series of regular, face-to-face events including such as 180, DISRUPT, 1MC — some of which went on to garner national press.

I’ve represented RTP in a variety of public forums alongside peers from Facebook and other digital leaders.

Real Results

Since my hiring date, Novartis, FMC, Toshiba, and now Lenovo, have all opened offices in RTP proper, and the vacancy rates have shrunk from 30% to 6%. While these results were not solely reliant on marketing, there was a clear and definite impact associated with my work.

Agency & Management Experience

Before RTP, I developed custom demand generation strategies to drive engagement and sales at one of the premiere digital marketing agencies in the Southeast – Centerline Digital. And before that? I worked in a managerial role for XTG, where I learned the bulk of my SEO and analytical training.
